Can you split Adderall in half?
Adderall IR tablets can be split when your prescriber orders a half dose. Most extended-release ADHD medications can't. Here's what each label says, how to split cleanly, and how to keep your count straight.

Which ADHD medications can be split?
It comes down to how each one is built. Immediate-release tablets are usually the same all the way through. Extended-release products rely on a coating, beads, or a pump shell to spread the dose out, and cutting them breaks that.

Why people split Adderall
- A prescribed half dose. The dose you need falls between two strengths, or your prescriber is starting low.
- A smaller afternoon dose. Some schedules use a full tab in the morning and a half tab later, so less is still active at bedtime.
- Tapering. Stepping down gradually under your prescriber's direction.
How to split a tablet cleanly
- Use a pill splitter, not a knife or your fingers. They cost a few dollars at any pharmacy and give much more even halves.
- Line the blade up with the score, the groove across the tablet, and press straight down.
- Split close to when you'll take it. Keep any spare half in the original bottle, away from moisture.
- If a tablet crumbles, don't guess at the dose. Ask your pharmacist what to do.
Keeping count when you split
Halves make the math harder. Two half tabs of 20 mg Adderall are 20 mg, not 40. A bottle of 60 tablets lasts longer if some doses are halves. It's easy to lose track of your daily total and of when you'll need a refill. Two habits help:
- Log in tablets and milligrams. Write down “½ tab, 10 mg” instead of just “Adderall” so your daily total stays right.
- Count your supply in halves. If you split regularly, what's in the bottle changes by half a tablet at a time. Count it that way so your refill request isn't too early or too late.
Does a half tab last as long as a whole one?
Roughly. A half tab of Adderall IR follows the same basic timeline, starting in 30 to 60 minutes and fading after about 4 hours, but at a lower level.
