How long does Adderall last?

Adderall IR typically works for 4 to 6 hours and Adderall XR for 10 to 12. Here's when each one kicks in, peaks, and fades, and why your own timing might be different.

The short answer

  • Adderall (IR, the tablet): usually starts working in 30 to 60 minutes, feels strongest about 1 to 3 hours in, and lasts roughly 4 to 6 hours. Many people feel it start to fade around 3 hours in.
  • Adderall XR (the capsule): starts working within about an hour and lasts up to 10 to 12 hours, because it releases in two stages. Many people feel it fading by 7 to 8 hours.
  • The drug stays in your body much longer than you feel it. Adult half-life is about 10 hours, which is why a late dose can still keep you awake.

Adderall IR, hour by hour

Adderall IR (immediate release) is a tablet that releases the whole dose at once. That's why it comes on quickly and fades quickly, and why many people take it two or three times a day.

Time after the doseWhat's typical
0 to 30 minAbsorbing. Most people don't feel much yet.
30 to 60 minKicks in. Focus and energy start to lift.
1 to 3 hStrongest effect. Blood levels peak around 3 hours; many people feel the peak a little earlier.
About 3 hStarts to fade. This is when the “wearing off” feeling often begins.
4 to 5 hMostly worn off for most people. The label allows up to 6.
5 h and laterYou may not feel it, but it's still in your system and can affect sleep and appetite.

Adderall XR, hour by hour

Adderall XR (extended release) capsules hold two kinds of beads: about half release right away, and the other half release about four hours later. The result feels like two IR doses taken four hours apart, blended into one smoother curve.

Time after the doseWhat's typical
30 to 60 minFirst beads kick in.
About 4 hSecond beads release, carrying the effect through the afternoon.
About 7 hBlood levels peak (later after a high-fat meal).
7 to 8 hStarts to fade.
About 10 hMostly worn off for most people. The label allows up to 12.

Why it might not last that long for you

Those ranges are averages. People's real timing varies a lot, and a few things are known to shift it:

Food

Taking Adderall XR with a high-fat meal doesn't change how much you absorb, but it delays the peak by about 2.5 hours. Some people notice a slower start on a big breakfast.

Acidic foods and drinks

The prescribing information notes that acidifying agents, including vitamin C and fruit juices, can lower how much amphetamine you absorb and speed up how fast your body clears it. Alkalinizing agents such as some antacids do the opposite. If you drink a lot of orange juice with your morning dose, that could be part of the story. Ask your pharmacist before changing anything.

Your body

Metabolism, body size, hydration, sleep, and how long you've been on the medication all play a part. Children often clear amphetamine a bit faster than adults.

The dose itself

A smaller dose, like a half tab, follows roughly the same timeline at a lower level, so it can drop below the point where you notice it sooner.

If your medication regularly wears off much sooner than expected, or the drop is rough, that's worth bringing to your prescriber. Timing and dose are theirs to adjust, and a log of when you took each dose and how you felt makes that conversation much easier.

Wearing off vs. the “crash”

As a dose fades, some people just feel their usual self come back. Others notice a dip: tiredness, irritability, low mood, or a spike in hunger. People often call this a crash or rebound. Tracking when it happens, relative to when you took your dose, is the quickest way to see whether it's a timing pattern.

How long does Adderall stay in your system?

Much longer than it works. The half-life of the main ingredient, dextroamphetamine, is about 10 hours in adults, so a meaningful amount is still in your body well after you've stopped feeling it. That's why the prescribing information warns that doses taken late in the day can cause insomnia, and why many people set a cutoff time for their last dose with their prescriber.

Common questions

How long does 10 mg of Adderall last?

Dose changes how strong the effect is more than how long it lasts. A 10 mg Adderall IR tablet typically works for about 4 to 6 hours, similar to other IR strengths. A 10 mg Adderall XR capsule typically works for about 10 to 12 hours.

Why does my Adderall wear off after 2 or 3 hours?

Some people clear amphetamine faster than average. Acidic foods or drinks around your dose, a lower dose, or simply how your body handles it can make it feel shorter. If it happens regularly, tell your prescriber. Timing, dose, and formulation are things they can adjust.

Does Adderall XR last longer than Vyvanse?

They're in the same range. Adderall XR typically lasts about 10 to 12 hours, and Vyvanse about 10 to 12, up to 14 in some adults. Vyvanse tends to come on more gradually because the body has to convert it into its active form first.

When should I take my last dose of the day?

That's a question for your prescriber, since it depends on your schedule and sleep. The prescribing information warns that late-day doses can cause insomnia, and the drug stays in your system for many hours after you stop feeling it.
