Can you open or split Adderall XR?
You can open an Adderall XR capsule and sprinkle everything inside on applesauce. You can't split one into smaller doses. Here's the difference, what the label says, and what to do if you need less.
The short answer
- Opening is fine. You can open the capsule and sprinkle all of the beads on applesauce, then swallow it right away without chewing.
- Splitting is not. The label says the dose of a single capsule should not be divided. Don't take half the beads or save some for later.
- Never chew or crush the beads. Some of them are coated to release later, and breaking the coating releases that dose early.
What's inside the capsule
An Adderall XR capsule holds two kinds of beads. One kind releases right away. The other has a coating that delays its release. The label says one capsule gives about the same levels as two doses of immediate-release Adderall taken four hours apart.
That's why you can't divide a capsule. If you pour out half the beads, you have no way of knowing how many of each kind you got. You might take mostly the early beads one day and mostly the late ones the next.

How to sprinkle Adderall XR on applesauce
- Put a spoonful of applesauce in a small dish or on a spoon.
- Open the capsule over it and empty out all of the beads.
- Swallow it right away without chewing.
- Don't save any. Throw away anything you didn't take, and don't prepare it ahead of time.
The label says a capsule sprinkled on applesauce is absorbed about the same as one swallowed whole. Opening it doesn't make it work faster or stronger.
If you need a smaller or shorter dose
- Ask for a lower strength. Adderall XR comes in 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 mg capsules.

Generics and Mydayis
Generic Adderall XR is sold as mixed amphetamine salts extended-release capsules. It follows the same rules as the brand. Mydayis is a longer-acting capsule with three kinds of beads. Its label also allows opening the capsule and sprinkling the entire contents on applesauce, and it shouldn't be divided either.
