Can you split Focalin or Dexedrine?
Scored dextroamphetamine tablets can be split when prescribed. Focalin tablets have no score line, and the long-acting capsules should never be divided. Here's what the labels say for Focalin, Focalin XR, dextroamphetamine tablets, and Dexedrine Spansules.
The short answer
- Dextroamphetamine tablets (Zenzedi and generics) are often scored in the 5 mg and 10 mg strengths. Split one only if it has a score line and your prescriber has ordered a half dose.
- Focalin tablets have no score line, in the brand or in the generics we checked. Ask about a lower strength instead. They start at 2.5 mg.
- Focalin XR capsules can be opened and sprinkled on applesauce, but you take all of it. Don't divide the beads.
- Dexedrine Spansule capsules are extended release. Swallow them whole.
Two different medications, one question
Focalin and Dexedrine aren't the same drug. Focalin is dexmethylphenidate, a close relative of Ritalin. Dexedrine is dextroamphetamine, one of the ingredients in Adderall. They're covered together here because the question is the same for both: do you have a long-acting capsule or an immediate-release tablet, and does that tablet have a score line?
What the label says for each form
| Medication | Can it be split? | What the label says |
|---|---|---|
| Focalin and dexmethylphenidate IR tablets | Not scored | The label gives no splitting instructions. Brand Focalin and the generic tablets we checked have no score line. Ask about a lower strength. |
| Focalin XR and dexmethylphenidate ER capsules | No | Swallow whole, or open and sprinkle the entire contents on applesauce. Don't crush, chew, or divide the beads. |
| Dextroamphetamine IR tablets (Zenzedi and generics) | If scored and prescribed | Many 5 mg and 10 mg tablets are scored. Other strengths usually aren't. Check yours. |
| Dexedrine Spansule and dextroamphetamine ER capsules | No | A long-acting capsule. The label gives no instructions for opening it, so swallow it whole. |
| Dextroamphetamine oral solution | Not needed | A liquid, so small doses can be measured exactly. |
Generics can look different from the brand and from each other. If you aren't sure whether your tablet is meant to be split, your pharmacist can tell you in a minute.
Why the capsules can't be divided
Focalin XR holds two kinds of beads in equal amounts. Half release right away, and half are coated to release later. If you pour out part of a capsule, you can't know how many of each kind you got. Chewing or crushing the beads breaks the coating and releases the later dose early.
A Dexedrine Spansule works in a similar way. Part of the dose is released promptly and the rest gradually over the day. Opening or dividing it isn't something the label covers.
How to split a scored tablet cleanly
- Use a pill splitter, not a knife or your fingers.
- Line the blade up with the score and press straight down.
- Split close to when you'll take it, and keep the spare half in the original bottle.
- If a tablet crumbles, don't guess at the dose. Ask your pharmacist what to do.
If you need a smaller dose
- Ask for a lower strength. Focalin tablets start at 2.5 mg and Focalin XR capsules at 5 mg. Dextroamphetamine tablets come in strengths as low as 2.5 mg.
- Ask about the liquid. Dextroamphetamine oral solution lets a prescriber order doses a tablet can't give.
- Keep count in halves. If you do split, log each dose in tablets and milligrams, like “½ tab, 5 mg,” so your daily total and your refill date stay right.
