Can you split Vyvanse in half?
No. The Vyvanse label says a single dose shouldn't be divided, whether it's a capsule or a chewable tablet. Here's what you can do with each form, and what to ask for if your dose feels like too much.
The short answer
- Vyvanse capsules can be swallowed whole, or opened and mixed into yogurt, water, or orange juice. Take all of it, right away.
- Vyvanse chewable tablets should be chewed completely before swallowing. Don't cut one in half to take a smaller dose.
- Need less? Vyvanse comes in 10 mg steps. Ask your prescriber for a lower strength instead of dividing the one you have.
What the label says for each form
| Form | Can it be split? | How to take it |
|---|---|---|
| Vyvanse capsule (10 to 70 mg) | No | Swallow whole, or open and mix the entire contents into yogurt, water, or orange juice. Take the whole mixture right away. Don't store it. |
| Vyvanse chewable tablet (10 to 60 mg) | No | Chew thoroughly before swallowing. Take the whole tablet. |
| Generic lisdexamfetamine capsules and chewables | No | Same instructions as the brand. |
The label is direct about it: a single dose should not be divided, and you shouldn't take less than one capsule or chewable tablet a day.
Why not, if it isn't a timed-release capsule?
Vyvanse works differently from most long-acting ADHD medications. The capsule doesn't hold timed beads or a special coating. The medication itself, lisdexamfetamine, is inactive until your body converts it into dextroamphetamine, mostly in the blood. That conversion is what spreads the effect across the day.
That's why opening a capsule is allowed. There's no release system to break. The problem with halving is the dose. A capsule holds loose powder, and there's no reliable way to pour out exactly half at a kitchen counter. The label doesn't give a way to halve a chewable tablet either.
How to open and mix a capsule
- Open the capsule and empty all of the powder into yogurt, water, or orange juice.
- Break up any clumps with a spoon if the powder has packed together.
- Stir until it's fully mixed.
- Take all of it right away. Don't save any for later.
You may see a thin film left in the glass afterwards. The label says that's inactive ingredients, not medication you missed.
What about dissolving it in water and drinking part?
You'll find people online describing this as a way to take a partial dose. The label doesn't support it. It says to take the whole mixture immediately and not to store it. If you want a smaller dose, a lower strength is the dependable way to get one.
If your dose feels like too much
- Ask about a lower strength. Capsules come in 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 mg. Chewables come in 10 through 60 mg.
- Check your timing. The label says to take Vyvanse in the morning, because afternoon doses can interfere with sleep.
- Switching forms doesn't change the dose. Capsules and chewables can be swapped milligram for milligram, so a chewable isn't a milder version.
- Write down what you notice. When it kicks in, when it fades, and how you sleep. A week of notes makes the conversation with your prescriber much easier.

Common questions
Can Vyvanse chewable tablets be cut in half?
No. The Vyvanse label says a single dose should not be divided. Chew the whole tablet thoroughly before swallowing. If you need a smaller dose, chewables come in strengths down to 10 mg.
Can you open a Vyvanse capsule?
Yes. You can open a Vyvanse capsule and mix the entire contents into yogurt, water, or orange juice. Stir until it's fully mixed and take all of it right away. Don't store the mixture.
Can you take half a Vyvanse capsule?
No. The label says the dose of a single capsule shouldn't be divided and that you shouldn't take less than one capsule a day. Ask your prescriber about a lower strength instead.
Does opening a Vyvanse capsule make it work faster?
Not in any meaningful way. Vyvanse lasts a long time because of how the body converts it into its active form, not because of the capsule, so mixing the powder into food or a drink doesn't change how it works.
Can you switch between Vyvanse capsules and chewables?
The label says capsules and chewable tablets can be substituted at the same milligram dose. Your prescriber or pharmacist makes that change.
