Can you cut methylphenidate in half?
It depends on which methylphenidate you have. Some immediate-release tablets are scored for splitting. Extended-release versions like Concerta have to stay whole. Here's how to tell them apart and what each label says.
The short answer
- Immediate-release tablets (Ritalin and its generics) are often scored. Split one only if it has a score line and your prescriber has ordered a half dose.
- Extended-release tablets, including Concerta, should never be cut, crushed, or chewed.
- Extended-release capsules like Ritalin LA can usually be opened and sprinkled on applesauce, but you take all of it. Don't divide the beads.
First, check which one you have
Methylphenidate is sold in more forms than any other ADHD medication, and the rules are different for each. Look at your bottle label. Letters like ER, XR, LA, CD, or “extended-release” after the name mean it's a long-acting form. If the label just says “methylphenidate HCl tablets,” it's most likely immediate release. Your pharmacist can confirm in a minute.
Methylphenidate forms, one by one
| Medication | Can it be split? | What the label says |
|---|---|---|
| Ritalin and methylphenidate IR tablets | If scored and prescribed | Brand Ritalin 10 mg and 20 mg tablets have a score line. The 5 mg doesn't. Most generics follow the same pattern. |
| Methylphenidate oral solution | Not needed | A liquid, so small doses can be measured exactly. |
| Methylphenidate ER tablets | No | Swallow whole. Don't crush or chew. |
| Concerta and its generics | Never | Swallow whole. Don't split, crush, or chew. The tablet doesn't dissolve completely, and you may see it in your stool afterwards. |
| Ritalin LA (capsule) | No | Swallow whole, or open and sprinkle the entire contents on applesauce. Don't crush, chew, or divide the beads. |
| Metadate CD (capsule) | No | Swallow whole, or open and sprinkle the entire contents on applesauce. Don't crush or chew. |
| Jornay PM (capsule, taken in the evening) | No | Swallow whole, or open and sprinkle the entire contents on applesauce. Don't chew the beads or divide a capsule. |
| QuilliChew ER (chewable) | 20 mg and 30 mg only | The 20 mg and 30 mg tablets are scored and can be broken in half. The 40 mg isn't scored. |

Why Concerta can't be cut
A Concerta tablet is built to release in stages. Levels rise within about an hour, then keep climbing slowly over the next several hours. The tablet itself doesn't dissolve completely, which is why you may notice it in your stool.
The label says splitting, crushing, or chewing a tablet compromises that extended release, and may make it less safe or less effective. The other long-acting tablets carry the same instruction: swallow them whole.
How to split a scored tablet cleanly
- Use a pill splitter, not a knife or your fingers. It gives much more even halves.
- Line the blade up with the score and press straight down.
- Split close to when you'll take it, and keep the spare half in the original bottle.
- If a tablet crumbles, don't guess at the dose. Ask your pharmacist what to do.
If your tablet has no score line, don't assume it splits evenly. Ask your pharmacist whether a scored version or a lower strength is available.
If you need a smaller dose
- Ask for a lower strength. Immediate-release tablets start at 5 mg, and most long-acting forms come in several steps.
- Ask about the liquid. Methylphenidate oral solution lets a prescriber order doses a tablet can't give.
- Don't cut a long-acting form to make it shorter. It won't shorten the effect. It changes how fast the dose arrives.
Keeping count when you split
Half tablets make the math harder. Two halves of a 10 mg tablet are 10 mg, not 20, and a bottle lasts longer when some doses are halves. Log each dose in tablets and milligrams, like “½ tab, 5 mg,” and count your supply in halves so your refill request isn't early or late.

Common questions
Can I cut methylphenidate in half?
Only some forms. Immediate-release methylphenidate tablets that have a score line can be cut in half when a prescriber orders a half dose. Extended-release tablets and capsules, including Concerta, should not be cut.
Can you cut Concerta in half?
No. Concerta must be swallowed whole. The label says splitting, crushing, or chewing it compromises the extended release and may make it less safe or less effective.
Can you cut Ritalin in half?
Brand Ritalin 10 mg and 20 mg tablets are scored and can be split when a prescriber orders a half dose. The 5 mg tablet isn't scored. Most generics follow the same pattern, but check yours with a pharmacist.
Can you open methylphenidate ER capsules?
Several can be opened. Ritalin LA, Metadate CD, and Jornay PM capsules can be opened and the entire contents sprinkled on applesauce. Swallow it without chewing, and don't take only part of a capsule.
Can you crush methylphenidate?
Don't crush any extended-release methylphenidate. Crushing breaks the release system. For immediate-release tablets, ask your pharmacist before crushing. A liquid form is available if swallowing tablets is the problem.
